Terms of use

This version dates from:

What this covers

Loclavis is a browser tool that lets you protect your own files locally on your device and decrypt them again. The provider is the person named in the legal notice. These terms govern the relationship between you and us when you use this tool.

Free use

Using Loclavis is currently free. Protecting files comes with a monthly allowance so the service stays usable for everyone.

Pricing

Loclavis Plus

Loclavis Plus has been announced but cannot be bought yet. There is therefore currently no paid offer and no subscription. Once Plus is available it will have its own terms with all the required consumer information. These terms cover free use only.

No registration

No registration is needed. We create no user account and keep no customer database.

Your responsibility for passwords

The password you protect a file with is known only to you. It is not sent to us and not stored.

Originals and backup copies

Please do not delete an original file or a backup copy until you have checked that the protected file really was saved and can be decrypted again with the intended password. The best moment to check is right after protecting it. Without that check you risk permanent data loss that we cannot undo.

Protected Loclavis files

A file protected with Loclavis in the .safe format can be decrypted again locally with Loclavis and the correct password. It is our own format. We do not promise that any other software can open it. For PDF files you can choose the PDF's own password protection instead; those files open in the usual PDF applications.

Availability

We aim to run the service reliably, but we cannot promise uninterrupted or fault free availability. Maintenance, technical faults or events beyond our control can cause temporary limitations. Protected files you have already saved are unaffected and can still be decrypted once the site is reachable again.

Technical limits

Processing happens in your browser and therefore depends on your device. Browser, available memory, free disk space, file size and operating system can all affect whether and how quickly an operation succeeds. We do not promise compatibility with every browser and device version. Very large files may run into limits depending on the device.

Acceptable use

Do not use Loclavis for unlawful purposes or to infringe the rights of others. You are responsible for being allowed to process the files you process. Because processing is entirely local, we do not see your files and do not monitor your use.

Security

Loclavis uses established methods, described on the security page. Nobody can promise absolute security, however. How well a protected file is protected depends largely on the strength and secrecy of your password and on the security of your device.

Security

Liability

The statutory rules apply to free use. We are fully liable for intent and gross negligence, for injury to life, body or health, and in every other case of mandatory statutory liability, in particular under product liability law.

For simple negligence we are liable only where a duty is breached whose fulfilment makes proper use possible in the first place and on whose observance you may regularly rely. In that case liability is limited to the foreseeable damage typical for this kind of agreement. There is no liability beyond that.

Please note the point about backup copies: because we do not know your files or your passwords, we cannot restore lost data.

Changes to the service and to these terms

We continue to develop Loclavis and may add, change or discontinue functions of the free offer where that is reasonable for you. We will mark material changes to these terms on this page and update the version date. Protected files you have already saved are unaffected by changes to these terms.

Final provisions

German law applies. Mandatory consumer protection rules of the country where you have your habitual residence are unaffected. If any provision of these terms is invalid, the remaining provisions stay in force.

The European Commission provides a platform for online dispute resolution. We are neither obliged nor willing to take part in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board.
