Decrypt a file

You have a protected file and the password. Select both and you get the original back. Decrypting costs nothing, is not capped, and works whether or not you have ever paid for anything.

How it works

Drag the protected file into the drop area. Loclavis recognises it and suggests decrypt mode automatically. Enter the password and start. At the end you download the original file under its original name.

Decryption is never locked

This is a deliberate decision, not a marketing line. A paywall in front of your own data would be a hostage situation. Even when your free monthly allowance is used up or a Plus subscription lapses, the way back to your files stays open.

If the password is wrong

The operation stops and no output file is produced. Loclavis does not distinguish between a wrong password and a damaged file, because a more precise error message would help an attacker. Check capitalisation and your keyboard layout.

If the file was altered

Every section carries a cryptographic checksum that also covers its position. If someone swapped, removed or appended parts, that is detected and the operation stops. No half decrypted file is saved in that case.

Password protected PDFs

A PDF you gave a password with Loclavis is easiest to open directly in your PDF reader. You do not need Loclavis for that. Decrypt mode here is meant for protected Loclavis files.
